How accurate is a pet GPS tracker?

Your dog may be resting beside you in the garden, yet the app still shows them a few meters away. Other times, the map marker does not move at all, even though you can see that your pet has already set off. In moments like these, it is easy to think that something is not working properly. But location accuracy and the freshness of location data are two different things. If you understand the difference, you can use the tracker’s data more effectively even while searching.

What level of accuracy can you expect?

With everyday GPS tracking, under favorable reception conditions, you can expect location accuracy on the order of a few meters. However, the actual accuracy also depends on the receiver, the antenna, and the conditions of use.

In practice, this means you should search around the point shown on the map, not necessarily at the exact rock or bush that the marker is pointing to. Zooming in on the map makes the display more detailed, but it does not make the device’s measurement any more accurate.

Why is the result different in open fields and between houses?

GPS satellite signals need to reach the tracker’s antenna. In open areas, the conditions for this are usually more favorable. Between tall buildings, under dense tree cover, or indoors, some of the signals may be blocked, and location accuracy may become less precise or the signal may temporarily be lost altogether. The position of the satellites and the design of the receiver also matter.

Near buildings, reflected signals can also reach the antenna. These travel a longer path than directly received signals and can make it harder to calculate the exact position. That is why the same device may show your dog more accurately in an open park than in a narrow courtyard. This phenomenon is called multipath propagation.

Why does the point move when the dog is standing still?

The GPS receiver repeatedly recalculates its position, and successive results do not necessarily fall exactly in the same place. Due to reception conditions, measurement noise, and reflected signals, the position of a stationary device can also shift slightly on the map. This measurement variation does not mean that the animal actually moved.

If an app connects the points recorded one after another, the differences can appear as a short, winding route. This comes from measurement variation: the line drawn does not necessarily show the exact path the dog actually took.

So a small deviation on its own does not necessarily indicate a malfunction. However, if you regularly experience large deviations even in open areas and with freshly updated location data, it is worth checking the device’s operation.

Older location data can also appear inaccurate

Imagine that on the map you see a position recorded at 2:32 p.m., while it is already 2:35 p.m. The device may have determined its location correctly three minutes earlier. However, the dog may have moved on in the meantime.

In this case, the marker shows the animal’s earlier location. That is why, when searching, you should always check the timestamp of the data as well as the point itself. An earlier position can still be a useful starting point, but you should inspect the surrounding area with that in mind.

Several conditions must be met for an update to appear. The tracker has to determine its position, transmit the data, and the app has to display it. An interruption in the data connection, the device being switched off, or power-saving mode can also explain why no new point arrives.

The 25-meter update threshold is not the GPS margin of error

The Vadalarm Pet Tracker sends a new location update only when it detects at least 25 meters of movement. If it stays in one place for several minutes, it temporarily switches off the GPS module to save power.

This behavior regulates how often location data is sent and how much power is used. The 25 meters does not mean that the GPS is off by that much, nor is it the upper limit of the discrepancy shown on the map. Measurement accuracy and the condition for sending data are separate properties.

Because updates are sent less frequently, the dog may already be somewhere else between two refreshes than at the last displayed point. Meanwhile, the measurement that was sent may have been accurate. For compact pet trackers, balancing battery life and location update frequency is an important design consideration.

How should you use location data during the search?

First, check the time of the latest update and the device’s battery level. Then see what kind of environment the position came from: an open area, between buildings, or near a covered location.

If several recent location updates are available, evaluate them together. Small, random shifts and the direction of movement shown across several consecutive points can provide different clues. The latter can help narrow the search, but do not infer an exact route from the line connecting the points.

When you reach the marked location, also search the immediate surroundings. You may still need to look for an animal hiding behind a bush, fence, or outbuilding, even if the tracker has already led you to the right area.

It is also worth trying all this during a shared walk, when you can see where your dog is. That way, you can get to know how the device behaves in your own environment. If you notice a recurring problem, the location, the time, and a screenshot sent to our customer support at info@vadalarm.hu can also help with the investigation.

Frequently asked questions

If the GPS points to the neighbor’s garden, is my dog definitely there?

Not necessarily. Due to measurement error, the marker may shift to a nearby property, and the time the data was received also matters. Check the update time, the additional location data, and the area around the marked point as well.

Will GPS become more accurate if the mobile network signal is better?

A better data connection can help location data be transmitted faster, but on its own it does not eliminate obstructions that block satellite reception or signal reflections. Positioning and data transmission are separate tasks.

Will the tracker show which room my cat is in?

You should not expect room-level indoor accuracy from traditional satellite positioning. The structure of the building can significantly degrade or block reception, and a location recorded earlier may still be shown in the app.

Does the 25-meter update threshold mean 25-meter accuracy?

No. The condition for sending a position update regulates when new data arrives. Measurement accuracy expresses how close the determined position is to the device’s actual location. The two cannot be directly inferred from one another.
